Chennai property owners and commercial establishments with pending municipal dues can use special collection counters that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will operate on four upcoming weekend days before the September 30 payment deadline.
GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran has directed specialised common collection counters to remain open at all zonal offices and at the Revenue Department in the Ripon Building on September 19, 20, 26 and 27. The arrangement is intended to help taxpayers clear outstanding payments before interest is applied.
The counters will accept payments for property tax, professional tax, company tax and various non-tax fees. The civic body has asked property owners and commercial establishments to settle their pending dues on or before September 30.
According to the announcement, balances that remain unpaid after the deadline will attract simple interest under Rule 268 (3) of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules, 2023. The rule provides the legal basis for the interest that will be charged on overdue municipal tax balances.
The weekend arrangement gives taxpayers additional in-person payment access through the corporation’s zonal offices and the revenue department at Ripon Building. The announcement does not specify separate operating hours for the counters, so taxpayers requiring details before visiting may contact the GCC helpline at 044-25619305.
The measure covers more than property tax alone. Payments relating to professional tax, company tax and other non-tax fees will also be accepted at the designated common collection counters. This makes the arrangement relevant to both individual property owners and commercial establishments managing multiple municipal obligations.
The September 30 deadline also establishes the immediate administrative timeline for the collection drive. After that date, the GCC has stated that unpaid balances will incur simple interest in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules, 2023. The corporation’s next stated step is to keep the special counters operational on September 19, 20, 26 and 27 before the deadline.
