Bengaluru Apartments Sustain Water Conservation Efforts

Bengaluru, renowned for its pleasant climate and verdant landscapes, recently grappled with one of its most severe water crises in recent memory. The city’s water scarcity, exacerbated by scant rainfall and dwindling groundwater reserves, prompted the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to implement stringent water conservation measures. These initiatives were embraced by many apartment complexes, which continue to uphold water-saving practices even as the immediate crisis subsides.

In response to the dire water situation, the BWSSB issued a series of directives in March, prohibiting the use of potable water for non-essential activities such as car washing, construction, gardening, fountains, road maintenance, and other upkeep tasks. Additionally, the use of drinking water from the Cauvery and borewells was restricted for filling swimming pools, highlighting the severity of the situation and the need for judicious water use. This comprehensive ban aimed to preserve the precious water resources for essential needs, setting a precedent for responsible water management across the city. By April, the BWSSB slightly eased these restrictions, permitting the use of borewell and rainwater to fill swimming pools in apartment complexes, clubs, and sporting institutes. However, the board maintained a strict prohibition on using Cauvery water for this purpose. To ensure compliance, the BWSSB announced penalties for violations: a fine of ₹5,000 for the first offence, with subsequent offences incurring an additional ₹500 per day.

The water crisis underscored the vulnerability of Bengaluru’s water supply infrastructure and highlighted the urgent need for sustainable water management practices. The continued adherence to water conservation measures by apartment complexes is a testament to the residents’ awareness and commitment to preserving this critical resource. Even as the city emerges from the immediate crisis, these initiatives serve as a crucial reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance in water usage. The sustained efforts by Bengaluru’s residents and the proactive measures taken by the BWSSB reflect a growing consciousness about water scarcity and the importance of sustainable living. As the city navigates future challenges, these water conservation practices will play a pivotal role in ensuring a resilient and sustainable urban environment.
