Bengaluru is grappling with an increasing number of complaints about buildings breaching various municipal bylaws. Residents from across different parts of the city have contacted the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to report several instances of illegal constructions and violations. Notably, a case has been highlighted concerning a building on Nandidurga Road Extension, which reportedly has over 15 significant infractions, including unauthorized water and electricity connections.
The structure, originally planned as a six-storey building on a modest plot, has seen continuous expansion and violations. Issues were first raised by local residents and even brought to the attention of the former chief minister. Complaints include the illegal addition of floors and amenities such as a generator and a proposed swimming pool. The building, sold and subsequently occupied after prolonged legal disputes, now stands as a focal point of controversy. Illegal connections from water and electricity services have been reported to BBMP, BESCOM, and BWSSB. Residents are also concerned about booster installations that exacerbate these issues. One local reported a substantial water bill despite the property being unoccupied, highlighting the misuse of resources. Complaints have also been lodged with Fire and Emergency Services, citing concerns over safety and access issues, particularly in areas like Nandidurg and Jayamahal Extensions.
In Basavangudi, another severe case involves the alleged conversion of a public lane into private property. A building on Church Road has encroached upon a 35 by 220 feet public lane, valued at Rs 70 crore, according to a senior citizen’s report. The complaint alleges that the builder and land grabbers manipulated city survey maps and land records to facilitate this encroachment. BBMP’s recent inspection confirmed that the building’s licence was not issued by them, indicating that it was constructed with a counterfeit permit.
The rising number of bylaw violations and the ensuing public complaints underscore the urgent need for stringent enforcement and regulatory oversight. The BBMP faces mounting pressure to address these issues effectively and ensure compliance with building regulations to safeguard the city’s infrastructure and residents.
