Navi Mumbai International Airport received its first reported direct cargo flight from Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday, with Silk Way West Airlines’ Boeing 777F carrying about 90 metric tonnes of import cargo. The flight was welcomed by the airport administration with a water-cannon salute. According to NMIAL, the airport operator, the arrival of the wide-body freighter is expected to strengthen Navi Mumbai’s cargo links with markets in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe and West Asia.
The Boeing 777F is among the larger twin-engine freighter aircraft used for air cargo operations. Its arrival marks the latest addition to the airport’s reported international cargo network. Earlier direct cargo consignments had arrived at Navi Mumbai International Airport from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Hong Kong and Frankfurt-Hahn in Germany, according to the report.
The Baku service gives exporters, importers and trade-linked businesses a direct cargo option between the two locations. The airport operator said the connection could provide additional logistics choices for industry, trade and exporters, although the report does not specify the frequency of the service, the types of goods carried or whether the route will operate on a scheduled or charter basis.
The development comes as Navi Mumbai International Airport begins the commercial use of its cargo facilities.
