Vasai-Virar ST Buses Add 584 Services for Konkan Ganeshotsav Travel

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation has scheduled 584 special buses from Vasai-Virar to the Konkan region for Ganeshotsav, as large numbers of residents travel to their native villages for the festival. The services are being released in phases through Sunday to support the seasonal demand for intercity transport.

The special services are intended to make the journey safer and more organised for passengers travelling from Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara. These urban areas have a sizeable population with roots in the Konkan, and travel to native villages rises during major festivals, particularly Ganeshotsav and Shimga, according to a report by Loksatta – Vasai-Virar.

The buses will operate from the Vasai, Arnala and Nalasopara depots. Of the total 584 services planned from the Vasai-Virar area, 549 buses will be released from the Nalasopara bus depot. The remaining buses are to be operated from the Arnala depot, according to the report. The report also identifies Vasai among the depots involved, but does not provide a separate allocation for that depot.

The additional services are being arranged against a recurring seasonal movement from Mumbai’s wider urban region towards Konkan districts. During Ganeshotsav, many residents who live and work in cities return to their native villages, creating concentrated demand for road-based public transport over a limited period. The MSRTC arrangement is aimed at providing an alternative to private vehicles and regular services during this travel peak.

The transport corporation had also made group booking available for passengers travelling together. The facility was intended to allow groups to register jointly and improve access to the special services. However, the report does not specify the fares, individual routes, departure timings, passenger capacity or the number of trips assigned to each Konkan destination.

The scale of the arrangement places Nalasopara at the centre of the seasonal transport operation, with nearly all the reported services from the region assigned to its depot. For passengers, the final travel plan will therefore depend on the release schedule, route allocation and information provided by the respective depots. The special buses are scheduled to continue being dispatched in phases through Sunday.
