Traffic restrictions and diversions will be enforced across central Delhi from 2pm to 8.30pm on Friday as the BRICS Summit gets underway at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, according to a Delhi Traffic Police advisory.
Traffic will be regulated at 22 diversion points, while restrictions are expected on more than 35 roads used for, or connected to, the movement of summit delegates. Commuters have been advised to avoid restricted corridors, plan journeys in advance and use public transport where possible.
The roads under regulation include Mathura Road, Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Moti Lal Nehru Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Marg. Other affected routes include Ranjeet Singh Flyover, Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, K.G. Marg, PWD Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Josef Broz Tito Marg and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.
At Dinesh Nandini Dalmia Chowk, vehicles travelling towards Mathura Road and Tilak Marg will not be allowed to proceed beyond the junction. At Ram Charan Aggarwal Chowk, commercial vehicles will be stopped from proceeding towards W-Point.
Additional diversions will be implemented at Mir Dard Chowk, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Janpath, Patel Chowk, the RML Hospital roundabout and Vande Mataram Marg. Traffic police have installed advance signage at several junctions, including ITO, warning motorists not to continue beyond restricted points.
The restrictions are intended to keep routes clear for the movement of delegates attending the summit at Bharat Mandapam. The traffic advisory covers the afternoon and evening period on September 11, when road users in central Delhi may encounter diversions, regulated traffic and access restrictions.
Government offices and schools have been shut for the day, and traffic officials expect that the closures will limit the impact on regular daytime movement. The police have nevertheless asked commuters to allow additional travel time and check their routes before leaving.
The restrictions will remain in force until 8.30pm, after which normal movement will depend on traffic conditions and any further directions issued by the Delhi Traffic Police.
