Ganesh mandals in Pune that distribute prasad or provide food to devotees during the Ganesh festival will have to register with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this year, according to a new food-safety requirement announced by the department.
The Pune division FDA has issued a press release stating that food distribution and community meals organised during the festival must follow hygiene and safety standards. FDA officials said registration will be mandatory for mandals involved in preparing or distributing prasad and food during the 10-day celebration.
The announcement has left some mandals seeking clarity on the registration process, including who must apply, how applications are to be submitted and what criteria will apply. The FDA has said that detailed instructions will be issued within the next few days.
The department has also not yet clarified how the rules will apply to people operating home-based food businesses during the festival, according to mandal representatives cited in the report. The uncertainty has added to questions about the scope of the new requirement and the responsibilities of organisers and food providers.
To monitor food preparation and distribution during the festival, the Pune division FDA has formed special teams. These teams will inspect the quality of mahaprasad and other food distributed by Ganesh mandals, as well as hygiene conditions at locations where food is prepared.
The inspections will focus on cleanliness and the possibility of contamination during food preparation. The FDA has warned that mandals could face strict action if serious violations are found during inspections.
The department is expected to issue further directions on the registration procedure and applicable criteria in the coming days.
