IndiGo will resume flights from Kolkata to Shanghai, Siem Reap in Cambodia and Singapore from October 1, restoring three international connections ahead of the Durga Puja holiday period, according to an airline official cited by The Times of India.
The Kolkata-Shanghai service will operate daily, while the Kolkata-Singapore flight will run six days a week, excluding Tuesday. The Kolkata-Siem Reap service will operate three days a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
The three routes had been withdrawn in March amid geopolitical challenges linked to the war in Iran, the report said. Industry sources attributed the earlier suspensions to a sharp decline in passenger loads following conflict-related flight disruptions across the region.
The reinstated services will add to IndiGo’s existing international network from Kolkata, which includes flights to Dhaka, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and Guangzhou. IndiGo currently operates more than 100 flights from the city, according to the report.
The airline is also planning additional international services from other eastern Indian cities. Twice-weekly flights from Bhubaneswar to Bangkok are scheduled to begin on October 1, followed by a Gaya-Bangkok service from October 26 and a Guwahati-Bangkok service from October 27. A Mumbai-Dar es Salaam flight is scheduled to begin on November 20, the airline official said.
Travel industry representatives welcomed the return of the Kolkata services. Anil Punjabi, chairman of the eastern region of the Travel Agents Federation of India, said the flights would create more travel options after recent disruption. Anjani Dhanuka, chairman of the eastern region of the Travel Agents Association of India, said the services could encourage other Indian and international carriers to add Kolkata connections.
The Kolkata-Singapore route will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Shanghai flight will operate daily, while the Siem Reap service will operate on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. All three Kolkata routes are scheduled to commence on October 1.
