A Western Railway ticket checker was injured after a passenger allegedly assaulted him during a ticket inspection at Jogeshwari railway station on Wednesday, prompting the Andheri Government Railway Police (GRP) to register an FIR against the passenger.
The incident took place at around 5pm on the foot overbridge serving platforms 3 and 4, where ticket checker Ashish Ranjan Gupta, 33, was checking passengers. According to the FIR, the passenger, identified as Ajay Dhivar, was stopped and asked to produce a valid ticket but said he did not have one.
Gupta then asked Dhivar to pay a fine of Rs 500. Dhivar told him that he had only Rs 100 with him, following which Gupta asked him to accompany him to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) office for prosecution, according to the police account reported by Times of India.
The FIR alleges that Gupta placed his hand on Dhivar’s shoulder while taking him towards the RPF office. Dhivar then pushed the ticket checker away and punched him in the face. Gupta’s spectacles broke during the assault, and he sustained injuries below his eyes, as well as injuries to his face and eyebrows.
Dhivar allegedly attempted to flee after the assault. Gupta chased him and caught him at the station before handing him over to GRP and RPF personnel. The passenger was taken to the RPF office, while Gupta was shifted to Trauma Care Hospital for treatment.
Doctors administered seven stitches below Gupta’s eye, according to the report. The injuries required medical attention but the report did not indicate any further details about the ticket checker’s condition.
Police identified Dhivar as a bank employee living in Santacruz. He was issued a notice and released, according to the police information cited in the report. The FIR remains the basis of the case, and the reported allegations have not been established in court.
The case has been registered by the Andheri GRP, which is responsible for investigating offences connected with the railway premises in the area. The available report did not specify the sections of law invoked in the FIR or indicate any further court proceedings.
