A Western Railway ticket checker was injured after a passenger allegedly assaulted him during a ticket inspection at Mumbai’s Jogeshwari station on Wednesday evening, prompting an FIR by the Andheri Government Railway Police.
The incident took place around 5pm on the foot overbridge serving platforms 3 and 4, where ticket checker Ashish Ranjan Gupta, 33, was checking passengers’ tickets, according to the FIR cited in a report by the Times of India. Police identified the passenger as Ajay Dhivar.
According to the complaint, Dhivar was stopped and asked to produce a ticket but said he did not have one. Gupta then asked him to pay a fine of Rs 500. Dhivar reportedly had Rs 100 with him. Gupta asked him to accompany him to the Railway Protection Force office for prosecution.
The FIR states that Gupta placed his hand on Dhivar’s shoulder while taking him along, after which Dhivar allegedly pushed him away and punched him in the face. Gupta’s spectacles broke and he sustained injuries beneath his eyes, as well as injuries to his face and eyebrows.
Dhivar allegedly attempted to flee, but Gupta chased and caught him. He was subsequently handed over to Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force personnel at Jogeshwari station, according to the report.
Gupta was taken to Trauma Care Hospital, where he received seven stitches under his eye. Police said Dhivar works at a bank and resides in Santacruz. He was issued a notice and released. The FIR has been registered by the Andheri GRP, and further legal proceedings will be handled by the railway police.
