Two people were injured after a 15-foot Ganesh idol fell from a trolley near Sheetal Talao in Mumbai’s Kurla area while it was being transported for Ganeshotsav 2026, Mumbai Police and civic officials said. The idol was damaged in the incident, which occurred when the trolley crossed a speed breaker.
The idol was being transported by a mandal in Prem Nagar, Dharavi, from Bail Baza in the V B Nagar area, according to a police official. The trolley was being pulled near Sheetal Talao when the idol fell, officials said.
The injured were identified as Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said both sustained minor injuries. One person was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital and the other to Habib Hospital. Both were treated and discharged, according to the civic body.
Following the incident, the damaged idol was immersed at Sheetal Talao, officials said. Further details about the circumstances of the transport and the trolley were awaited.
The incident comes weeks after a Ganesh idol fell during an arrival procession in south Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area on August 23. Two people were killed and at least five others were injured after the idol of the Bhuleshwarcha Raja Mandal fell near Balaram Merchant Road, close to Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk. Mumbai Police, the civic administration, the fire brigade, traffic police, ambulance services and ward staff were mobilised after that incident.
Ganeshotsav 2026 is scheduled to begin on September 14 and will continue for 10 days across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
