The Telangana government has approved higher stipends for 798 students at government Ayush institutions after a 28-day protest by medical trainees, raising house surgeon pay to ₹29,792 a month and postgraduate stipends to between ₹67,032 and ₹74,482.
The decision was issued through Government Order 356 on Wednesday and covers students studying Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani and Naturopathy. The revised payments bring the stipends of Ayush trainees on par with those of their allopathic counterparts, according to the report.
Under the revision, the monthly stipend for 405 house surgeons has increased from ₹13,754 to ₹29,792. The stipend for 393 postgraduate scholars will rise from the earlier range of ₹30,947 to ₹34,385 to between ₹67,032 in the first year and ₹74,482 in the third year.
The revision follows a strike led by the Telangana AYUSH Joint Action Committee. The protest began at the Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Erragadda, Hyderabad, and Ananthalakshmi Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Warangal before spreading to Ayush institutions across the state.
Around 1,000 medicos stepped away from routine duties during the protest, including inpatient care, while undergraduate students also joined the agitation in solidarity. The reported disruption came as trainees sought implementation of earlier assurances on stipend parity.
Protesters had alleged that stipend revisions for Ayush students had not kept pace with those for allopathic students. They said stipends for allopathic students had been revised eight times over 15 years, compared with three revisions for Ayush students during the same period.
The revised amounts apply to the house surgeons and postgraduate students covered by the government order. The order follows the conclusion of the month-long protest and sets out the new stipend levels for the four Ayush disciplines named in the decision.
