Pimpri-Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge has asked Pune district authorities to work towards a consensus-based solution on the Pavana closed pipeline project, which is considered important for the city’s long-term water supply. Landge made the request during a meeting with Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi on Wednesday, according to a report by Loksatta – Pune.
The mayor asked the district administration to consider the difficulties and positions of farmers in the Maval region, along with those of other affected stakeholders, before deciding the next steps for the project. He also requested that a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis be arranged to discuss further action.
Landge and Dudi reviewed discussions held at earlier meetings on the Pavana project, the concerns raised by farmers from Maval and the proposed course of action. The mayor said that the issues raised by farmers during previous consultations needed to be examined by the administration while working towards a positive solution.
According to the report, Landge asked the district administration to coordinate with farmers, local residents and all relevant departments. The administration was also asked to assess their difficulties and expectations and take the necessary steps to address them through consultation.
The Pavana project has a direct bearing on Pimpri-Chinchwad’s plans for securing water over the long term. The city is expanding rapidly and its population is increasing, making sustained water-supply planning an important administrative concern, the mayor said during the meeting.
At the same time, the mayor stressed that taking the project forward would require due consideration of the concerns of farmers and residents in Maval. His stated position was that the city’s water requirements and the interests of local farmers should be addressed together through coordination among the concerned authorities and affected communities.
The meeting comes as the administration considers the project’s next steps after earlier discussions with farmers and other stakeholders. No final implementation decision, construction timeline or agreement with affected parties was announced in the report.
The next reported step is to seek the chief minister’s availability for a meeting on the Pavana closed pipeline project, while the district administration is expected to continue consultations with farmers, local residents and the relevant agencies.
