Potholes on key Uran roads, including the Khopate bridge route, are raising concerns about traffic congestion for travellers from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai heading to Konkan for Ganeshotsav, according to a report by Loksatta – Navi Mumbai published on September 9, 2026.
The affected routes include sections of the Mumbai-Goa National Highway and the Khopate bridge. The report also identifies potholes on the Khopate-Koproli road and the Chирner-Kharpada road near Sai village. These roads are expected to see increased vehicle movement during the festival travel period.
Many travellers from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai use the Gavanphata-Chirner-Kharpada route through Uran taluka to reach Konkan. The route can reduce the journey by about 8 to 10 kilometres, but travellers are currently facing a combination of damaged road surfaces and congestion linked to unauthorised parking.
Traffic congestion has been reported on the Chirner-Gavanphata-Dighode road. The report said that although several roads in Uran taluka are broad and in relatively good condition, the Coastal Road under the City and Industrial Development Corporation and the Khopate-Koproli road under the Public Works Department have developed substantial potholes.
The road conditions could affect vehicles using the Uran route during Ganeshotsav. The report also said that potholes near Sai village on the Chirner-Kharpada road were causing concern among local residents, who have called for urgent repairs before traffic volumes increase.
The issue involves multiple authorities. Roads under the City and Industrial Development Corporation and the Public Works Department fall under separate administrative jurisdictions, while traffic management on the route is handled by the police. This division means that road repairs and movement planning will need to be coordinated before the festival rush.
Sanjay Patil, senior police inspector in the Uran traffic division, said that planning would be undertaken to address congestion on the Uran route. He said traffic jams would not occur during the Ganeshotsav period, according to the Loksatta report.
The report did not specify a repair schedule, the number of potholes, or any confirmed traffic restrictions. The immediate operational milestones are the proposed traffic-management arrangements and any repair work undertaken by the concerned authorities before festival travel intensifies.
