A car and a taxi collided inside a tunnel on Mumbai’s Coastal Road while travelling from Nariman Point towards Worli on Tuesday evening, causing long queues and severe traffic disruption during the peak-hour rush, according to a report by Mid-Day.
The collision was reported at around 4.30 pm on the south Mumbai route. The impact left the vehicles damaged inside the tunnel and disrupted traffic movement along the Coastal Road, with congestion extending across the busy Nariman Point-Worli stretch.
Vehicles began accumulating soon after the crash as motorists travelling through the route were forced to slow down. Traffic remained affected for a considerable period, with commuters reporting delays that continued for hours during the evening peak.
Mumbai Traffic Police and a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation rescue team responded to the incident. Officials deployed a crane to remove the damaged vehicles from the road and worked to clear the affected section of the tunnel.
Police personnel also managed traffic at the location while the vehicle-removal operation was under way. The heavy volume of traffic on the route meant that movement remained slow even after efforts began to clear the crash site, according to the report.
The incident affected commuters using the Coastal Road to travel between South Mumbai locations during one of the busiest periods of the day. The report did not provide details about injuries, the identities of those involved or the cause of the collision.
The crash comes amid separate police action over alleged high-speed driving on the Coastal Road near Marine Drive. Mumbai Police registered a case on Monday, September 7, against a group of unidentified drivers who were allegedly seen driving at high speed and endangering other road users. Police said they were working to identify six or seven cars and their drivers after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
Officials have indicated that safety measures could be strengthened in the future to prevent similar incidents and improve traffic management along the Coastal Road. The immediate response to Tuesday’s collision focused on removing the damaged vehicles and restoring traffic movement through the tunnel.
