Ganesh idol transport in Mumbai led to two minor injuries in Kurla after a 15-foot idol fell from a trolley near Sheetal Talao while being moved for Ganeshotsav 2026, according to Mumbai Police and civic officials. The idol was damaged in the incident, which occurred as the trolley crossed a speed breaker.
The idol was being transported by a mandal in Dharavi’s Prem Nagar area from Bail Baza in V.B. Nagar, officials said. The trolley was being pulled near Sheetal Talao when the idol fell during the crossing. The incident took place ahead of the 10-day Ganeshotsav, which begins in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on September 14.
The two injured people were identified as Santosh Jaiswal, 28, and Rohit Jaiswal, 25. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, both suffered minor injuries. One was taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital and the other to Habib Hospital. Both received treatment and were discharged.
The damaged idol was subsequently immersed at Sheetal Talao, officials said. The available report did not provide details about the trolley’s design, the arrangements used to secure the idol, or whether any action was taken in relation to the transport vehicle or organisers.
The Kurla incident comes weeks after a separate idol collapse during the Bhuleshwarcha Raja mandal’s Ganesh aagman procession in south Mumbai. That incident occurred on the night of August 23 on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar.
Two people were killed and at least five others were injured in the Bhuleshwar collapse, officials had earlier said. The deceased were identified as Sanket Nevshe, 33, and Brijesh Hemant Joshi, 30. The incident occurred while the idol was being brought to the area during the arrival ceremony.
Following the Bhuleshwar collapse, the Mumbai civic administration, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Traffic Police, the 108 emergency ambulance service and BMC ward staff were mobilised at the site. The response involved agencies responsible for emergency care, traffic management and local civic operations.
Ganesh idol movements and public processions involve roads, speed breakers, traffic diversions and large gatherings across Mumbai during the festival period. The Kurla incident has again brought attention to the immediate safety risks associated with moving large idols through the city, although officials have not released further details about the circumstances or any broader review of procession arrangements.
