— The Thane Municipal Corporation has proposed starting a CBSE school in Kavesar, in the Ghodbunder area, using a seven-storey school building constructed on land reserved for educational use. The proposal, submitted for approval before the civic body’s general assembly, envisages classes from pre-primary to Class 10 and operation through a selected private institution.
The proposed school is intended to provide CBSE curriculum access to students from ordinary households and expand the range of educational options available through the municipal education system. According to the civic administration’s proposal, the school would be operated by an institution selected after expressions of interest are invited.
The Kavesar site falls under the Majiwada-Manpada ward committee. The municipal corporation has 3,580 square metres of land reserved for the school, on which a ground-plus-seven-storey building with a built-up area of 4,113.85 square metres has been constructed. The building has been handed over to the education department. The administration has stated that the site meets the space requirements for a CBSE school.
The proposed facility is expected to include a library, science laboratory, computer room and mathematics laboratory. Separate rooms and halls for dance, music, art and sports are also planned. The site includes a playground next to the school building, while drinking-water facilities and separate toilets for boys and girls are available on each floor, according to the proposal.
Students are to receive books, uniforms, educational material and school meals free of cost, in line with facilities provided to students in other municipal schools. The civic education department will provide furniture, benches, projectors, television sets and other equipment required to operate the school.
The selected institution will be responsible for appointing teachers and non-teaching staff with the required educational qualifications. It will also handle the salaries of these employees and the administration of the school. The municipal corporation has said it will undertake the process of obtaining the necessary permissions and no-objection certificates from the state government.
The proposal follows the launch of a municipal CBSE-affiliated school in Kharegaon under the Kalwa ward committee for the 2026-27 academic year. The Kharegaon school has received a positive response, according to the report, prompting a suggestion that CBSE schools be established in each ward. Mayor Sharmila Pimpolkar and several corporators have also called for expansion of this model.
The civic body currently runs 102 primary schools across Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and English mediums. Eleven of its English-medium schools operate on a self-financing basis and follow the Maharashtra State Board curriculum. The Kavesar proposal would add a municipal school following the CBSE curriculum to this network.
The immediate next step is consideration of the proposal by the municipal general assembly. If approved, the corporation will invite expressions of interest from institutions to operate the school and proceed with the required state-level permissions and no-objection certificates.
