The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has launched a concerted effort to tackle persistent waterlogging issues plaguing various construction sites of the Kanpur Metro project.
Following reports of water accumulation affecting operational efficiency and public safety, officials from UPMRC, Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC), and Jalkal convened to strategize solutions during a recent meeting. Mayor-led discussions underscored the urgency of addressing waterlogging, particularly around sites adjacent to the developing Metro lines. Notably, areas like Naveen and PPN markets were identified as hotspots where rainfall frequently inundates surroundings despite brief showers, posing logistical challenges. Detailed assessments revealed specific engineering oversights contributing to the problem.
For instance, the installation of a 1,200mm pipe intended to manage rainwater near Naveen market was found disconnected from the drain line, exacerbating waterlogging woes. Similar issues were noted near Shyam Palace, where a drain closure necessitated the installation of Hume (RCC) pipes to redirect water flow. Highlighting infrastructural strain exacerbated by urban expansion, Executive Engineer from zone-4 emphasized the historical burden on outdated drainage systems, now compounded by population growth. Amidst these challenges, UPMRC officials assured that ongoing repairs and enhancements, including the completion of a 45-meter sewer line in Macrobert Ganj, were progressing swiftly to alleviate local concerns. Concerns regarding environmental impact surfaced as well, with Mayor expressing reservations over tree removal and compensation discrepancies related to the Kanpur Metro project.
Clarifications were sought regarding rent payments for felled trees, highlighting collaborative efforts between UPMRC and local authorities to align with environmental regulations. Looking ahead, Mayor directed comprehensive joint inspections to resolve outstanding complaints promptly. A follow-up meeting scheduled in 15 days aims to review progress and ensure timely completion of remedial actions across affected Kanpur Metro project sites.
