Pune Metro services on the Pimpri-Chinchwad–Swargate corridor were disrupted for about 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon after an electricity supply failure affected trains and station facilities, according to information reported by MahaMetro and published by Loksatta. Eight trains were held at platforms as a safety precaution while power was restored.
The disruption began at about 12:25 p.m. on September 6 after a fault affected the electricity supply reaching Pune Metro through receiving stations near Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and Range Hills. The outage affected Line 1 operations, along with power required for lighting, escalators, lifts and ticketing systems at stations.
MahaMetro’s control room began issuing regular announcements to passengers about the delay across the affected stations. Trains operating on the corridor were kept at the stations where they were located so that they would not remain stranded inside tunnels or on open sections of the route, the organisation said.
The Metro’s technical team subsequently used an alternative arrangement through the Vanaz substation to restore electricity for trains operating on the first corridor. Power for the trains was restored at about 12:47 p.m., after which the eight trains held at platforms were released.
Electricity needed for station facilities was restored at approximately 1:06 p.m. The main supply reaching the Range Hills substation from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited was restored at about 1:50 p.m., according to MahaMetro’s account of the incident.
The outage also affected passenger movement inside stations because lifts and escalators were temporarily unavailable. Loksatta reported that when services resumed, a crowded train arriving from the Pimpri-Chinchwad side reached Mandai station, prompting passengers to move towards the escalators. The report described confusion and crowding, and cited a passenger’s social-media post alleging that some people fell or had their feet caught during the rush. Those passenger accounts were not independently verified in the supplied report.
MahaMetro apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers and said that Metro services between Pimpri-Chinchwad and Swargate had returned to normal. The incident involved both train operations and the station systems needed for passenger access, information, ticketing and vertical movement during the outage.
