Thane Dahi Handi Injuries: 56 Govindas Hurt, Children Included

Thane | At least 56 Govindas were injured while forming human pyramids during Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane on Saturday, including children under 14, according to a report by Loksatta – Thane. The injured participants included residents from Thane, Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, and Navi Mumbai.

The injuries ranged from minor wounds to fractures and serious trauma affecting legs, backs, shoulders, knees, necks, heads, and chests. Some injured Govindas were treated and discharged, while those with fractures or more severe injuries remained hospitalized.

The injured were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, managed by the Thane Municipal Corporation, and the district government hospital. The report highlighted that some children sustained injuries to their hands, legs, and shoulders.

The injuries occurred across the Thane police commissionerate area, where 254 Dahi Handis had been organized, attracting Govinda teams from Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding regions. Multiple competitions to break suspended pots took place throughout the day.

Human pyramids involve participants climbing one another to reach and break the Dahi Handi. The reported injuries raise concerns about the safety of children participating in these events, particularly regarding falls or pyramid collapses leading to head, neck, spinal, and limb injuries.

The report does not provide detailed injury counts by venue, the exact number of children injured, or information on safety measures or subsequent actions by organizers or authorities. Treatment continues for injured participants.
