Mumbai | September 6, 2026 — The Maharashtra government has approved 70 new posts in the sportsperson horse-rider cadre for the Mumbai Police Mounted Unit, restructuring the unit’s staffing without increasing its sanctioned strength or budget allocation.
The decision was issued by the state Home Department through a government resolution dated September 4. Under the approved arrangement, 70 existing posts from the establishment of the Mumbai Police Commissioner will be surrendered and replaced by an equal number of posts in the sportsperson horse-rider cadre.
The posts being surrendered include two Police Sub-Inspectors, four Assistant Police Sub-Inspectors, 16 Police Head Constables and 48 Police Constables. The corresponding posts in the new cadre will carry the same pay scales as the positions being replaced.
The restructuring follows a proposal submitted by the Mumbai Police Commissioner for changes to the staffing structure of the Mounted Police Unit. The proposal was considered by a high-level secretaries committee chaired by the Maharashtra Chief Secretary at a meeting on July 6. The Finance Department has also given its concurrence, according to the resolution details reported by Mid-Day.
The government has specified that the Mounted Police Unit will require separate service entry rules as an independent unit. These rules are intended to govern recruitment and service arrangements for the sportsperson horse-rider cadre.
The resolution also places limits on the unit’s future expansion. It states that no posts beyond the 70 listed in the order will be created under the approved arrangement and that no additional funds will be sanctioned for the unit. Costs related to the horses’ health, feed and stables will have to be managed from available resources.
The decision therefore changes the designation and cadre structure of the existing positions rather than adding personnel to the Mumbai Police establishment. The number of posts in the unit will remain unchanged, while the new arrangement formally places the positions within the sportsperson horse-rider cadre.
The Mumbai Police Mounted Unit is a specialised police establishment that requires personnel trained to work with horses and carry out mounted duties. The resolution’s provisions on entry rules, staffing limits and operational expenses set out the administrative framework under which the unit will function after the restructuring.
The government resolution was issued under the orders and in the name of the Governor of Maharashtra by Nagnath Ramchandra Jadhav, Section Officer in the Home Department. The next administrative steps include prescribing separate service entry rules and implementing the approved replacement of posts within the existing staffing and financial limits.
