A 14-year-old boy died after coming into contact with a live electrical wire while climbing onto the roof of a local train at the Thakurli Chole railway yard in Dombivli, Thane district, on Thursday evening, according to a report by Loksatta. The boy, identified as Yagnesh Suresh Shetty, had reportedly gone to the yard with two friends and was attempting to take photographs on top of a stabled train.
The incident occurred at a railway yard where local trains moved out of service from the Kalyan railway yard are kept. According to information provided by Yagnesh’s father, Suresh Shetty, to Vishnunagar police, the boy had not attended his regular private tuition class on Thursday evening. He went instead with two friends to the Thakurli Chole railway yard.
The report said Yagnesh climbed onto the roof of a local train using the coach ladder and window support. His two friends remained beside the coach and intended to photograph him standing on the roof. While attempting to steady himself, Yagnesh’s hand came into contact with a live electrical wire on the train roof, causing an electric shock. He fell from the roof to the ground.
His friends informed his family, following which his parents, other residents of the housing complex and police personnel reached the yard. Yagnesh was taken to the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s Shastrinagar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after examination.
The boy lived with his family at Rajvaibhav NX housing society in the Ganeshnagar area of Dombivli West. His father reported the incident at Vishnunagar police station, where police recorded an accidental death case, according to Loksatta.
Senior Police Inspector Ramchandra Chopade, Police Inspector Armya Kshirsagar, Assistant Police Inspector Abhijit More and Police Sub-Inspector Ravindra Lone visited the site after being informed about the incident. The report did not indicate any arrest or separate criminal case in connection with the death.
The Thakurli Chole railway yard is described as an open area used by several residents of Ganeshnagar as a shortcut to Thakurli railway station. Residents also reportedly use parts of the area for walking, while some young people visit the site for recreation. Railway security personnel patrol the area, although the report said the yard remains accessible. Vegetable cultivation is also carried out in parts of the area by some operators between October and May.
The immediate next steps are the completion of the accidental-death investigation by Vishnunagar police and any further action by the railway authorities regarding access and safety around the yard.
