Mira Bhayandar meat sale ban will apply on September 8 and 15 during the Jain community’s Paryushan Parva, according to a decision being processed by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation. Meat shops across the city are expected to remain closed on the two days, while the civic animal husbandry department will take action against establishments that continue sales in violation of the order.
The proposed restriction covers the first and final days of the Paryushan Parva period, which runs from September 8 to September 15. Mira Bhayandar has a sizeable Jain population, and the municipal administration is taking the step against the backdrop of the religious observance.
Vikram Niratale, the municipal corporation’s animal husbandry officer, said the state government had issued directions for a two-day meat-sale restriction during Paryushan Parva. “Directions have been issued by the government to ban meat sales on September 8 and 15 during Paryushan Parva. Accordingly, the proposal has been submitted to senior officials, and a notice will be issued after approval is received,” he said, according to the report.
The wording of the official statement indicates that the proposal was awaiting approval from senior authorities when the report was published. The municipal corporation is expected to issue a public notice after that approval. The notice will determine the formal implementation of the restriction and provide the basis for enforcement by the animal husbandry department.
The report states that the administration is acting in accordance with directions attributed to the government and the Bombay High Court concerning meat-sale restrictions during Paryushan Parva. It does not provide the text of the relevant government direction or court order. The municipal corporation’s formal notice is therefore expected to clarify the scope of the restriction, the establishments covered and the enforcement process.
The proposed two-day restriction also recalls an earlier dispute in the city. In 2015, the then BJP-led administration had decided to prohibit meat sales for eight days during Paryushan Parva. The decision triggered opposition from residents and was subsequently withdrawn, according to the report.
The current proposal is narrower, with the restriction limited to the first and last days of the festival period. The move comes after other decisions taken by the ruling party in the city in connection with Bakri Eid, the report said. The two-day measure is being closely watched because of the political influence and sizeable presence of the Jain community in Mira Bhayandar.
For meat retailers and residents, the immediate operational issue will be the municipal corporation’s final notification. Until that notice is issued following senior approval, the details of enforcement remain subject to the formal order. The corporation’s animal husbandry department is expected to act against shops that remain open on September 8 and September 15 once the restriction is officially notified.
