HYDERABAD: A central technical team will inspect alternative sites for the proposed Kothagudem airport on September 7, giving Telangana’s long-pending regional aviation plan a fresh assessment. Two locations reviewed earlier were considered unsuitable because of technical constraints. The state has now proposed four to five alternatives for evaluation, with the outcome expected to influence the next stage of the airport project.
The proposed airport is intended to improve air connectivity in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and support its wider economic development. The district has several tourism and pilgrimage attractions, with the Sri Sitaramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam being among the most prominent. The central team’s field inspection will focus on whether the newly identified locations can support airport development. Officials are expected to examine geographical conditions, climate and technical feasibility before recommending a suitable site. Site selection is a critical stage in airport planning. A location must meet aviation requirements while also allowing practical access for passengers and supporting infrastructure. Terrain, weather conditions and surrounding development can significantly influence construction costs and long-term operations. For Bhadradri Kothagudem, better air connectivity could reduce travel barriers for residents and visitors. The district is geographically distant from some of Telangana’s major urban centres, making improved transport links important for tourism, business and access to services.
The airport could also strengthen the region’s tourism economy. Easier access to Bhadrachalam and other destinations could increase the potential for visitors from other parts of Telangana and neighbouring states. However, the benefits would depend on regular flight operations, affordable fares and reliable ground connectivity to surrounding towns. The project is also part of a broader effort by Telangana to expand regional aviation infrastructure. Proposals involving Mamnoor airport in Warangal and the Adilabad airport are also being pursued with the Centre. This wider approach could help create a more distributed aviation network instead of concentrating air travel around Hyderabad. Regional airports can play a role in connecting smaller cities with larger economic centres when supported by adequate passenger demand and viable routes. The September 7 inspection will therefore be important for determining whether any of the proposed Kothagudem locations can meet the required standards. A favourable technical assessment could allow the project to progress towards subsequent planning and approvals.
At the same time, airport development requires coordination between aviation authorities, the state government and local agencies. Land availability, environmental considerations, road access and supporting infrastructure will all influence the project’s eventual feasibility. For Bhadradri Kothagudem, the proposed airport represents a potential long-term investment in regional connectivity. The immediate priority is establishing a technically suitable location.
