Hyderabad Secunderabad Station Redevelopment Targets More Capacity

HYDERABAD: Secunderabad railway station has emerged as the fourth-highest revenue-earning passenger railway station in India, recording ₹1,276.29 crore in passenger revenue and around 2.78 crore passenger movements during the last financial year. The ranking highlights the station’s importance to Hyderabad’s regional connectivity, while its ongoing ₹714 crore redevelopment is expected to expand capacity and improve passenger facilities.

The station ranks fourth nationally in both passenger revenue and passenger footfall, according to the railway data cited in the report. New Delhi Metro City Centre, Howrah and MGR Chennai Central occupy the positions above it. Secunderabad’s strong performance reflects its role as a major railway link connecting Hyderabad with cities across northern and southern India. Regular connections with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata contribute to the station’s high passenger movement. The Hyderabad railway network depends on major stations such as Secunderabad to handle long-distance travel alongside growing regional mobility needs. With nearly 2.78 crore passenger movements recorded during the year, the station faces considerable pressure on its existing facilities. The ongoing redevelopment is therefore significant for the city’s transport infrastructure. The project, estimated at ₹714 crore, is targeted for completion by June next year.

The upgraded station is expected to offer improved passenger facilities and handle more trains and travellers. Increasing capacity could become increasingly important as Hyderabad continues to experience population growth, employment expansion and greater inter-city travel demand. The project could also influence movement around the station. Better pedestrian circulation, road access and connections with local public transport will be important as passenger numbers increase. From a wider urban mobility perspective, strengthening railway infrastructure can help Hyderabad manage travel demand without placing the entire burden on roads. Rail transport can accommodate large passenger volumes and support more efficient movement between major cities. The station’s revenue performance also demonstrates the economic value of well-connected transport hubs. High passenger footfall supports surrounding businesses and services while strengthening the role of Secunderabad as a major activity centre.

However, additional capacity will need to be matched by efficient passenger management. Safe pedestrian movement, clear information systems, convenient access and smooth integration with buses and Metro services will be important for ensuring that redevelopment improves the overall travel experience. With the redevelopment expected to be completed next year, Secunderabad station could strengthen its position among India’s leading railway hubs. For Hyderabad, the project represents an opportunity to integrate long-distance rail infrastructure more closely with the city’s wider public transport and urban mobility system
