Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills is set for a major junction-level mobility upgrade after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) awarded an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract worth ₹157.55 crore. The project covers a flyover at NFCL Junction and an underpass and flyover combination at TV9 Junction. Construction is scheduled to take 24 months. The project is designed to address traffic movement at two important junctions in Banjara Hills.
At NFCL Junction, the scope includes a two-lane unidirectional flyover. At TV9 Junction, the plan includes a two-lane unidirectional underpass along with a three-lane unidirectional flyover. The separation of traffic across different levels is intended to reduce conflict between through traffic and vehicles using the junctions. This could help improve journey reliability on busy corridors connecting Banjara Hills with surrounding parts of central Hyderabad. The project comes as Hyderabad continues to experience rising traffic volumes on established arterial roads. Junction improvements can increase road capacity, but their wider value depends on how they connect with surrounding streets. An underpass can allow uninterrupted movement for selected traffic flows, while a flyover can reduce delays at surface-level intersections. However, improved capacity can also attract additional traffic over time.
Urban transport planning therefore needs to consider public transport, walking infrastructure and traffic management alongside road expansion. This is particularly relevant in established neighbourhoods where road space is limited. KNR Constructions has received the Letter of Acceptance from GHMC for the combined works. The contract is valued at ₹157.55 crore, excluding GST, with a 24-month construction period. For the city, the execution phase will be as important as the infrastructure itself. Banjara Hills carries substantial daily traffic, so construction activity could create temporary diversions and additional pressure on nearby roads. Careful traffic management, pedestrian access and phased construction will be important to limit disruption while the works progress. The TV9 Junction underpass is part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow at key Hyderabad intersections. Earlier GHMC planning documents have identified the TV9 Banjara Hills corridor and surrounding junctions as locations requiring traffic-management interventions. This suggests that the latest project should be viewed as part of a wider attempt to improve movement through established urban corridors rather than as an isolated road project.
If delivered as planned, the new infrastructure could reduce delays at two busy junctions and improve connectivity through Banjara Hills. The benefits will depend on how effectively the new structures integrate with existing roads. For a mature urban area, the bigger challenge is balancing additional road capacity with safer and more efficient alternatives to private vehicles. Better public transport links, pedestrian facilities and coordinated junction management can help ensure that infrastructure investment supports long-term urban mobility. The immediate priority will now be execution, with the 24-month construction window placing emphasis on timely delivery and minimising disruption to daily traffic.
