Advanced Cooling Solutions for Indian Farmers

Indian farmers may soon see a significant reduction in post-harvest losses thanks to an advanced cooling technology introduced by Israeli startup Natural Offset Farming (NOF). Despite being one of the world’s leading producers of paddy, wheat, oilseeds, milk, fish, fruits, and vegetables, India suffers from substantial post-harvest losses. According to a 2022 NABARD study, losses for vegetables range from 4.87% to 11.61%, while fruits experience losses between 6.02% and 15.05%. NOF’s new technology promises to tackle this issue head-on.

NOF’s patented cooling technology uses liquid CO2 and offers a “cooling-as-a-service” model, providing multiple-use value for farmers. This innovative approach could transform the landscape of post-harvest treatment in India. “NOFcooling is a patented device that employs liquid CO2 to generate cooling energy, offering an energy-efficient method for cooling in precision agriculture. The equipment can treat 500 kg, 200 kg, or 100 kg of fruits and vegetables without relying on electricity,” stated an officer at NOF. The technology has already attracted interest from major retailers like Big Basket and Reliance Fresh.

The technology has been introduced in Maharashtra for cooling cucumbers, strawberries, and grapes. In Haryana, it is being used with vegetables and mushrooms. The system has also proven effective with mangoes, lychees, and flowers by shifting CO2 from the emitters to the field, meeting farmers’ cooling needs efficiently. A recent demonstration in Bihar showcased the technology’s potential with lychee fruit. NOF is also collaborating with Mother Dairy to extend the shelf life of apricots from Leh, which typically have a mere three-day shelf life, insufficient for reaching larger markets like Delhi. The CO2 liquid treatment within the NOF device reduces pathogens and bacteria, thereby extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

The impact of this technology is already evident. In Maharashtra’s Satara district, the shelf life of strawberries increased from 2-3 days to 7-8 days, significantly boosting yield. Similarly, encouraging results have been observed with grapes in Nashik. NOF is making this technology accessible to smallholder farmers in India at a modest price of ₹12,000. By focusing on the needs of Indian farmers, NOF’s cooling technology offers a promising solution to the persistent problem of post-harvest losses. This innovation not only helps in maintaining the quality and freshness of produce but also contributes to the overall efficiency and profitability of the agricultural sector. As the technology gains traction, it holds the potential to revolutionise post-harvest management and significantly benefit farmers across India.
