Pune Floriculture Drive Promotes Sustainable Fertiliser Use
Pune: A renewed push for sustainable farming practices is encouraging rose cultivators in Pune district to adopt soil-based nutrient management instead of relying heavily on chemical fertilisers. The initiative aims to improve long-term soil productivity, reduce cultivation costs and strengthen environmentally responsible floriculture, supporting climate-conscious agricultural development in one of Maharashtra’s important flower-growing regions.
The awareness programme was conducted in Yelase village of Maval taluka as part of a nationwide campaign promoting balanced fertiliser use in agriculture. Agricultural scientists engaged directly with commercial rose growers, highlighting the environmental and economic implications of excessive chemical inputs while encouraging practices that preserve soil quality without reducing crop productivity. Experts explained that prolonged dependence on synthetic fertilisers and intensive plant protection chemicals, particularly in polyhouse rose cultivation, has begun affecting soil health across several production units. Continuous chemical application has increased soil alkalinity and electrical conductivity, conditions that restrict the natural availability of essential nutrients required for healthy plant growth. Such degradation can gradually reduce productivity while increasing farmers’ dependence on additional agricultural inputs.
To better understand local conditions, scientists collected soil samples from polyhouse farms for laboratory analysis. The assessment will help determine nutrient availability, soil fertility status and the extent to which fertiliser application can be optimised. Findings are expected to support customised nutrient management plans tailored to individual cultivation units rather than adopting uniform fertiliser practices. The programme placed strong emphasis on balanced fertiliser use, recommending soil testing before nutrient application and promoting biofertilisers and biological crop protection methods as viable alternatives to excessive chemical usage. Agricultural experts believe these approaches can improve nutrient-use efficiency, restore microbial activity within the soil and enhance resilience against long-term degradation while maintaining flower quality demanded by commercial markets. For Pune’s floriculture sector, which supplies roses to domestic and export markets, sustainable cultivation practices have growing economic significance. Rising input costs, changing climatic conditions and increasing awareness of environmentally responsible farming are prompting growers to explore production methods that combine profitability with resource conservation. Soil health has emerged as a critical factor in ensuring stable yields and maintaining the commercial viability of protected cultivation systems.
