West Bengal is preparing to significantly expand its waste processing infrastructure over the next financial year, signalling a broader shift towards scientific solid waste management as urban centres grapple with rising volumes of municipal waste. The planned expansion aims to reduce dependence on landfills, improve resource recovery, and strengthen environmental outcomes across growing cities, reflecting the increasing urgency of sustainable urban services.

While many cities have improved door-to-door collection, the challenge has increasingly shifted towards segregation, treatment and disposal.
