New Delhi: Delhi and its surrounding urban corridors are set for a major transport expansion, with road and mobility projects valued at more than ₹1 lakh crore planned or under development across the National Capital Region. The proposed network spans about 2,105 kilometres and is aimed at easing persistent congestion while strengthening links between Delhi, Haryana and key economic zones.
The scale of the Delhi road projects reflects how quickly the capital’s mobility pressures have expanded beyond city boundaries. Daily travel increasingly depends on cross-border movement between residential districts, employment hubs, airports and industrial areas. As a result, several proposed interventions focus on removing bottlenecks rather than simply adding capacity to existing roads. Among the most significant proposals is a six-lane access-controlled corridor connecting the DND area with Faridabad and Sohna. The route is expected to improve movement across southern NCR and create stronger links towards the wider regional highway network. Government information has also highlighted the project’s use of processed material from city waste sites in construction, pointing to the potential for infrastructure delivery to address more than one urban challenge. Another major intervention is the planned six-lane connection between the Shiv Murti interchange and Nelson Mandela Marg through a tunnel and associated road infrastructure.
The project, approved at an estimated cost of nearly ₹6,970 crore, is designed to provide an alternative route around heavily congested stretches near the airport, Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj. The wider package also includes upgrades around the Ashram–Badarpur corridor, Mehrauli–Gurugram Road and junction improvements near Kalindi Kunj and the Okhla Barrage. These locations are important not only for private vehicles but also for freight movement, public transport and workers travelling between Delhi and neighbouring cities. Urban planners caution that the success of these Delhi road projects will depend on how well they connect with public transport, walking routes and last-mile services. New corridors can improve traffic flow, but poorly integrated junctions may simply shift congestion to the next bottleneck.
Land use changes around major roads will also require careful planning to avoid unchecked development and additional car dependence. For citizens, the immediate question is whether this large infrastructure pipeline will translate into shorter, more predictable journeys. For the wider NCR economy, the challenge is to ensure that faster road connectivity is matched by cleaner mobility, safer streets and more balanced urban growth. The next phase will depend on execution, coordination and whether transport expansion is planned as a connected regional system rather than a collection of standalone road projects.
