Hyderabad: Secunderabad Railway Station is undergoing a major transformation that could reshape how passengers experience rail travel in Hyderabad. With nearly 70 per cent of construction completed, the ₹715-crore redevelopment project is moving beyond conventional station upgrades by integrating retail, public transport and sustainable infrastructure into a single urban mobility hub.
The redevelopment introduces a large sky concourse that will house retail outlets, dining spaces and passenger amenities, allowing travellers to spend waiting time away from crowded platforms. Urban planners view such mixed-use transport infrastructure as an emerging model that combines mobility with commercial activity while making better use of high-footfall public spaces. Among the project’s defining features is a redesigned passenger circulation system inspired by modern transport terminals. Separate arrival and departure areas are being created near Platform 10 to improve pedestrian movement and reduce congestion within the station precinct. Dedicated access points are expected to streamline passenger flow, particularly during peak travel periods. A key component of the redevelopment is its emphasis on multimodal connectivity. A new skywalk under construction will directly connect the station with the Secunderabad East and Secunderabad West Metro stations, as well as the nearby bus terminal. Once operational, commuters will be able to transfer between rail, metro and bus services without crossing busy roads, improving accessibility and reducing travel time across the city.
The upgraded station will also include a new G+3 station building on the northern side, expansion of the southern terminal, a roof covering all platforms, multi-level parking for around 600 equivalent car units, additional foot overbridges, lifts, escalators and travelators. These improvements are intended to accommodate rising passenger volumes while improving accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families travelling with luggage. Sustainability has been incorporated into the redevelopment through infrastructure such as a 5 MW solar power plant, electric vehicle charging stations, sewage treatment facilities and rainwater harvesting systems. Urban development experts note that integrating environmental measures into large transport projects is increasingly important as Indian cities seek to reduce operational emissions while improving public infrastructure. According to railway officials, several supporting facilities, including the temporary booking office, Railway Protection Force building and portions of the approach road, are already operational. Civil construction of the northern station building has been completed, while work continues on the air concourse, roof structure, skywalk and utility infrastructure. Overall project execution has reached around 70 per cent, with completion targeted for April 2027.
As Hyderabad continues to expand its transport network, the Secunderabad redevelopment reflects a broader shift towards integrated, people-centric mobility infrastructure. If delivered on schedule, the project is expected to strengthen regional connectivity while setting a benchmark for future railway station modernisation across South India.
