Kolkata’s Crackdown on Pavement Obstructions Yields Night-time Results

Kolkata: In a concerted effort led by the Park Circus Traffic Guard, along with support from Entally Police and Beniapukur Police, a decisive anti-encroachment operation unfolded overnight on CIT Road and surrounding areas on Thursday. The initiative aimed to reclaim pedestrian pathways compromised by widespread encroachments, ranging from unauthorized stalls to political activities and illegal parking.

The focal point of the operation was directed towards the stretch leading to Park Circus, where pavements had been severely obstructed, impeding pedestrian movement. According to officials, the primary objective was to realign hawker stalls and restore public access without resorting to eviction measures. Sources within the police department revealed encountering various forms of encroachments during the operation. These included stalls encroaching upon pedestrian space, goods indiscriminately dumped on pavements, and the unauthorized use of pavements for parking. Additional areas surveyed included Ram Mohan Bera Lane, Bechulal Road, Padmapukur, and Beniapukur Road, illustrating the widespread nature of the problem across the locality.

Moving forward, authorities have announced plans for periodic anti-encroachment drives accompanied by videography to document each intervention. Senior officers assured stakeholders that evictions would be avoided if hawkers voluntarily dismantle all permanent and semi-permanent structures, including tin or aluminium roof shades and iron frameworks. In response to the crackdown, local hawkers were issued a 24-hour ultimatum to remove unauthorized structures. While some vendors complied immediately, others delayed action until Friday morning, citing the abrupt nature of the enforcement drive. A tea stall owner at Padmapukur acknowledged the need for compliance with hawking regulations, pledging cooperation with authorities to prevent future disruptions.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts to uphold urban planning standards and ensure unhindered pedestrian movement in Kolkata’s bustling commercial hubs. As stakeholders adapt to regulatory requirements, authorities remain committed to fostering a conducive environment for both businesses and residents alike.
