Auda’s Rs 180 Crore Plan Stormwater Network for Shela

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) has acknowledged longstanding waterlogging issues in Shela due to the absence of a dedicated stormwater network, marking a critical step towards resolving infrastructure deficiencies in the area. Auda officials have confirmed plans to initiate the construction of a comprehensive stormwater drainage system imminently, aimed at alleviating rainwater drainage concerns exacerbated during monsoon seasons.

The revelation comes after years of persistent challenges faced by 35 residential societies in Shela, where 28 have been identified for illegal sewer connections, prompting regulatory notices for corrective actions. Auda’s recent statement outlined ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects totalling substantial investments across various town planning (TP) schemes encompassing Shela, Sanathal, Telav, Manipur, and Godhavi areas. Currently underway are road projects amounting to Rs 100 crore, water supply enhancements valued at Rs 285 crore, and drainage improvements estimated at Rs 240 crore. Additionally, Auda has earmarked Rs 180 crore for forthcoming stormwater network initiatives crucial for mitigating future waterlogging risks.

In response to immediate challenges posed by the monsoon onset, Auda has implemented interim measures including the installation of percolating wells in waterlogged areas and the elevation of manholes prone to drainage overflow. A significant Rs 235 crore drainage project targeting these specific areas is poised for implementation, underscoring Auda’s commitment to bolstering local infrastructure resilience. Regarding sewerage management, Auda has stipulated stringent guidelines, granting development permissions contingent upon the installation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) by societies with more than 100 flats. Notices have been issued to rectify 28 instances of illegal sewer connections, underscoring Auda’s proactive stance on regulatory compliance and sustainable urban development practices.

Looking forward, Auda has assured the community that sewer connections will be facilitated post the completion of ongoing drainage infrastructure upgrades, signifying a comprehensive approach towards resolving long-standing civic challenges in Shela.
