Bangalore : The Namma Metro service is grappling with severe overcrowding issues, particularly on the Whitefield stretch of the Purple Line. On Wednesday, the situation reached a point where two passengers had to disembark from an overcrowded coach to enable the doors to close and the train to move. This incident highlights a recurring problem at high-traffic stations like the Metro interchange at Majestic.
The increasing daily ridership of Namma Metro, which recently exceeded 800,000 passengers, is exacerbating the issue. Peak hours see a surge of commuters jostling to board trains, with many forced to step out due to doors failing to close properly. Regular passengers, especially those travelling towards Whitefield, face significant challenges during these busy times. Since the entire Purple Line from Challaghatta to Whitefield became operational last year, the patronage has increased markedly. However, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has not added new coaches to meet the demand, instead opting to optimise the current fleet. Despite the apparent strain on capacity, BMRCL officials maintain that the existing fleet of 32 train sets, each with six coaches, has not yet reached its optimal carrying capacity. The delay in the supply of 21 train sets from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) has further complicated the situation.
In response to the mounting pressure on the Purple Line, BMRCL has revised train schedules and introduced more loop trains from Majestic towards Whitefield, effective from Saturday, July 6. According to a press release from BMRCL, during morning peak hours, 15 train services will originate from Majestic, with eight running to Pattandur Agrahara (ITPL), four to Whitefield, and one to Baiyappanahalli. This marks an increase from the previous nine trains originating from Majestic. The additional train services in the morning will depart Majestic at intervals of 3.3 minutes up to 10:25 AM. These services are intended to alleviate the congestion by providing more frequent travel options. The press release also mentioned that out of the 14 trains currently terminating at Garudacharpalya, six will be extended to Pattandur Agrahara (ITPL)/Whitefield. This adjustment ensures that passengers alighting at Garudacharpalya will have access to a train towards Pattandur Agrahara within 3.5 minutes.
In the evening, the headway will be reduced to five minutes starting from Baiyappanahalli at 4:20 PM towards Mysuru Road station, instead of the previous 4:40 PM. A BMRCL official stated that a detailed analysis of travel patterns and footfall on the Purple Line informed these changes. As Bengaluru’s metro system continues to experience rising demand, the adjustments aim to address the immediate needs of commuters. However, the long-term solution will require significant investment in expanding the fleet and improving overall service capacity.
