Mumbai: Recurring flooding along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Highway has renewed debate over the role of wetlands and natural drainage systems in protecting rapidly urbanising regions from extreme rainfall. Environmental advocates have urged Maharashtra authorities to investigate alleged encroachments on ecologically sensitive areas, arguing that the loss of natural flood buffers has contributed to repeated disruption along one of western India’s busiest transport corridors.
The concerns follow fresh episodes of waterlogging on sections of the highway passing through the Vasai–Virar region during intense monsoon rainfall. According to representations submitted to the state government, environmental groups have called for stronger enforcement against alleged illegal reclamation of wetlands, mangroves and other low-lying ecosystems that historically absorbed excess stormwater. The organisations contend that the gradual conversion of marshes, paddy fields and coastal wetlands has reduced the area’s natural drainage capacity. They argue that runoff from surrounding hills and forested catchments is increasingly unable to flow efficiently towards coastal water bodies, resulting in water accumulation on roads and adjoining urban areas during heavy rainfall.
The allegations have also raised questions about long-term land-use planning and environmental compliance in rapidly expanding suburban regions. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the claims, and any assessment of responsibility will depend on detailed investigations by the relevant agencies. However, urban planners widely acknowledge that preserving natural drainage networks is critical to reducing flood risk in low-lying metropolitan areas.
