Dhar: A newly constructed railway overbridge on the Indore–Ahmedabad highway corridor has come under scrutiny after sections of its carriageway developed potholes and surface damage within months of being opened to traffic. The deterioration has raised concerns about construction quality, maintenance practices and traffic management on a key regional transport route in western Madhya Pradesh.
The overbridge, built at an estimated cost of ₹120 crore, was partially opened for traffic earlier this year while work on the remaining carriageway continued. With only one lane currently operational, vehicles travelling in both directions have been sharing the same carriageway, increasing traffic pressure on the completed section and creating potential safety concerns for motorists. Visible pavement damage, including potholes and exposed aggregate, has emerged along portions of the road surface. Drivers, particularly two-wheeler users, have reported difficulties caused by loose gravel, dust and uneven pavement conditions, while the restricted traffic arrangement has increased the need for cautious driving through the affected stretch. Transport infrastructure specialists note that premature road surface failures can result from multiple factors, including incomplete pavement construction, heavy axle loads, drainage issues, material performance or the movement of construction traffic before final project completion. Such issues often require detailed technical assessments before definitive conclusions regarding construction quality can be established.
Railway authorities have indicated that the overbridge project has not yet reached full completion. According to officials, final pavement works and associated repairs are expected to be undertaken after both carriageways become operational, suggesting that the current road surface may not represent the project’s finished condition. Nevertheless, the incident has renewed attention on the importance of lifecycle quality assurance in public infrastructure projects. Civil engineering experts emphasise that regular inspections, independent quality audits and timely maintenance are essential to ensure newly commissioned infrastructure performs as intended, particularly on strategic transport corridors carrying high volumes of freight and passenger traffic. The Indore–Ahmedabad highway serves as an important economic link connecting industrial, agricultural and commercial centres across Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Maintaining reliable road conditions on associated bridge infrastructure is therefore critical for regional mobility, freight efficiency and road safety.
Urban and transport planners argue that infrastructure performance should increasingly be evaluated not only by project completion but also by long-term durability and maintenance outcomes. Integrating performance monitoring into construction contracts, alongside transparent defect rectification mechanisms, can help improve public confidence while reducing lifecycle costs for transport assets. As work on the overbridge continues, authorities are expected to complete the remaining carriageway and undertake corrective measures where necessary. The project will likely be closely watched as an example of the need to balance rapid infrastructure delivery with rigorous construction standards and sustained maintenance throughout the asset’s operational life.
