Ahmedabad Bullet Rail Crossings Complete Key Engineering Stage

Ahmedabad: The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has completed the installation of all 13 heavy portal beams required for the Ahmedabad section, marking a major engineering milestone in the construction of India’s first bullet train corridor. The achievement paves the way for the next stages of viaduct development while ensuring uninterrupted operations on existing railway lines beneath the elevated alignment.

The completed Ahmedabad portal beam programme supports the 18-kilometre high-speed rail viaduct that passes through the city. These specially engineered reinforced concrete structures enable the elevated corridor to cross some of the busiest sections of India’s conventional railway network without disrupting passenger or freight services. The final and largest beam was installed above the Ahmedabad–Delhi main railway line at Sabarmati. Measuring 34.5 metres in length and weighing approximately 1,640 metric tonnes, it represents the heaviest precast portal beam used in the Ahmedabad section. Engineers completed the complex lifting operation in roughly three hours using a 2,200-metric-tonne crawler crane while maintaining rail operations below through coordinated planning and strict safety protocols. Across the project, five portal beams have been installed at Maninagar, seven at Vatva and one at Sabarmati, completing all planned heavy crossings over operational railway corridors within Ahmedabad. Infrastructure experts regard such installations as among the most technically challenging components of elevated rail construction due to the need for precision engineering above live transport infrastructure.

The milestone reflects continued progress on the 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, which will connect 12 stations between Gujarat and Maharashtra. Once operational, the system is expected to significantly reduce travel times, improve regional economic connectivity and provide a lower-emission alternative to domestic aviation and long-distance road transport. Ahmedabad will serve as a key interchange through the planned Sabarmati Multimodal Transport Hub, integrating high-speed rail with conventional railway services, metro connectivity and other urban transport modes. Urban mobility specialists argue that such multimodal integration is essential for maximising passenger convenience and encouraging greater use of sustainable public transport. With major structural components now in place, project teams are expected to focus on track laying, electrification, signalling systems, station infrastructure and operational testing. These phases will determine the readiness of the corridor for commercial high-speed rail services while ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

Beyond engineering achievements, the completion of the Ahmedabad portal beam phase highlights India’s growing capability to execute technically advanced rail infrastructure at scale. Urban planners note that the corridor’s long-term success will depend on integrating high-speed rail with transit-oriented development, sustainable urban planning and efficient multimodal networks, enabling infrastructure investment to deliver broader economic, environmental and mobility benefits.
