Prayagraj Seeks More Ahmedabad Train Connectivity

Ahmedabad: Construction of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor has reached another major engineering milestone with the completion of all portal beam installations required for the Ahmedabad section of the elevated viaduct. The achievement enables the future high-speed rail alignment to cross active railway corridors while allowing conventional train services to continue without interruption.

The milestone centres on the successful installation of 13 specialised portal beams across the city’s 18-kilometre high-speed rail stretch. Designed to support the elevated viaduct over some of western India’s busiest railway lines, these structures are among the most technically demanding elements of the project because they require large-scale construction above operational rail infrastructure. The final beam, positioned over the Ahmedabad–Delhi railway corridor near Sabarmati, is the largest installed in the city. Weighing approximately 1,640 metric tonnes and measuring 34.5 metres in length, the precast concrete structure was lifted into place using heavy-duty crawler crane technology during a carefully coordinated operation that allowed existing railway services below to remain operational. Earlier installations included crossings above the Mumbai–Ahmedabad railway line at Maninagar and Vatva, completing all major rail overpasses required for the Ahmedabad alignment. Infrastructure engineers note that portal beam construction demands precise planning, specialised lifting equipment and extensive coordination between project authorities and railway operators to maintain operational safety.

The progress marks an important step in developing India’s first dedicated high-speed rail system, which is expected to reshape inter-city mobility between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Beyond reducing travel times, high-speed rail is widely regarded as a lower-emission alternative to short-haul aviation and long-distance road transport when integrated with clean energy sources and efficient urban transit systems. Ahmedabad occupies a strategic position within the corridor through the upcoming Sabarmati Multimodal Transport Hub, where high-speed rail will connect with conventional rail services, metro infrastructure and other public transport modes. Urban mobility specialists believe such integration will be critical to ensuring passengers can transition efficiently between regional and local transport networks.

As civil works continue, attention is expected to shift towards track laying, electrical systems, signalling, station infrastructure and operational testing. These stages will determine the readiness of the corridor before commercial high-speed services begin. For India’s infrastructure sector, the completion of Ahmedabad’s portal beam phase demonstrates growing domestic expertise in executing complex rail engineering projects at scale. The long-term value of the corridor, however, will depend not only on engineering achievements but also on how effectively high-speed rail is integrated with sustainable urban planning, multimodal connectivity and transit-oriented development that supports inclusive regional growth.
