Hyderabad: As Hyderabad prepares for continued urban expansion, the city’s water utility is advancing a broader strategy to increase the use of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes, aiming to reduce pressure on potable water supplies while improving long-term urban water resilience. The initiative comes as authorities plan to extend services to newly developing areas under the Comprehensive Urban Renewal and Expansion (CURE) framework.
The proposed strategy focuses on diverting treated water towards activities that do not require potable-quality supplies, including industrial operations, construction projects, landscape irrigation and institutional campuses. By replacing fresh drinking water with recycled water in these sectors, officials expect to preserve valuable potable resources for domestic consumption and emergency requirements. The treated water reuse initiative also reflects a wider shift in urban water management, where cities increasingly view wastewater as a resource rather than a disposal challenge. Urban infrastructure specialists believe such standardisation can improve transparency while creating a more reliable market for recycled water across industrial and commercial sectors. Experts argue that expanding treated water reuse delivers multiple environmental and economic benefits. Besides reducing pressure on freshwater sources, it lowers wastewater discharge into natural water bodies and supports more sustainable construction and landscaping practices. It also strengthens climate resilience by creating an alternative water source during periods of drought or declining reservoir levels. Alongside promoting recycled water, the utility is also reviewing consumption patterns across the distribution network to identify unusually high usage and improve equitable allocation.
