Pune Expressway Project Draws Infrastructure Focus
Pune: The Mumbai–Pune Expressway’s Missing Link corridor has become the focus of renewed policy debate after a monsoon-triggered landslide temporarily disrupted traffic, prompting discussions over infrastructure resilience, engineering standards and public accountability. While vehicular movement has resumed, the incident has highlighted the growing challenge of designing transport infrastructure capable of withstanding increasingly extreme weather conditions.
Traffic on the newly operational section was suspended for several hours earlier this week after heavy rainfall triggered slope instability near the corridor. Authorities subsequently restored movement after clearing debris and conducting safety assessments, maintaining that key engineering structures, including tunnels and bridges, were not structurally affected by the incident. The Pune Missing Link is a 13.3-kilometre bypass designed to avoid the older Lonavala–Khandala ghat stretch of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. The corridor is expected to shorten travel distance and reduce journey times between Maharashtra’s two largest urban economies while improving freight movement and regional connectivity.
However, the temporary disruption has intensified public discussion around climate resilience in major infrastructure projects.
