Hyderabad has launched two new waste management initiatives aimed at improving urban cleanliness, reducing illegal dumping and promoting environmentally responsible waste disposal. The programmes focus on collecting bulky household waste and religious offerings separately, supporting the city’s broader efforts to strengthen sustainable waste management and maintain cleaner public spaces.
Under the new initiative, dedicated collection vehicles will visit neighbourhoods every Saturday to collect bulky household items that are not covered under routine door-to-door waste collection. Residents will be able to dispose of old furniture, mattresses, cupboards, wooden cots and other oversized domestic waste through the scheduled collection drive. Municipal officials believe the programme will help curb illegal dumping of bulky waste on roadsides, vacant plots and public spaces while encouraging residents to adopt safer and more organised disposal practices. In addition, Hyderabad has introduced a temple waste management drive to ensure religious offerings are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Designated collection points will be established at selected temples, allowing devotees to deposit flowers, garlands, coconuts and other devotional materials separately from regular municipal waste.
Urban environmental experts say segregating temple waste can help reduce pollution around water bodies and public spaces. Organic offerings can also be composted or processed into useful by-products, supporting circular waste management practices while minimising landfill disposal. To improve public participation, the municipal corporation will introduce QR code-based registration along with detailed operational guidelines. The digital system is expected to streamline citizen participation and improve coordination of collection services.
Experts note that specialised waste collection programmes are becoming increasingly important as Hyderabad continues to expand. Managing bulky household waste and religious offerings separately can improve waste segregation, reduce environmental pollution and strengthen overall urban sanitation systems. As the city grows, initiatives such as weekly bulk waste collection and temple waste management are expected to contribute to cleaner neighbourhoods, more efficient municipal services and a more sustainable approach to urban waste management.
