Hyderabad Tests Bridges To Improve Urban Resilience
Hyderabad is set to undertake a comprehensive structural assessment of 24 major bridges as part of a proactive effort to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve public safety. The initiative comes amid rising traffic volumes and increasing pressure on ageing transport assets that support daily movement across the city.
The Hyderabad bridge safety audit will cover flyovers, railway overbridges (ROBs) and railway underbridges (RUBs) constructed several decades ago. Municipal authorities have directed engineering teams to evaluate the structural health of these critical transport links using advanced diagnostic technologies that can identify deterioration without disrupting the integrity of the structures. A specialised consultancy will conduct the inspections using Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), a widely adopted engineering technique that assesses the internal condition of bridges without damaging concrete or structural components. The exercise is expected to provide detailed information on material quality, hidden defects and the remaining service life of each bridge. The Hyderabad bridge safety audit will include Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) testing to examine the internal strength and uniformity of concrete, alongside Rebound Hammer Tests that measure surface hardness. Engineers will also inspect critical structural elements such as girders, expansion joints, bearings, piers and pier caps to identify signs of wear, internal voids or structural distress.
Urban infrastructure experts say regular structural assessments have become increasingly important as cities experience growing traffic loads and ageing public assets. Periodic bridge health monitoring helps authorities detect deterioration at an early stage, reducing maintenance costs while lowering the risk of unexpected failures. Based on the inspection findings, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is expected to prepare bridge-specific repair and rehabilitation plans. Structures requiring urgent intervention will be prioritised, with restoration works scheduled in phases according to technical risk assessments. Experts note that preventive maintenance is generally more cost-effective than emergency repairs and can significantly extend the operational life of transport infrastructure. They also emphasise that structural audits should be integrated into long-term asset management strategies to improve infrastructure resilience and optimise public investment.
