Ahmedabad: Customs authorities at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have seized 729 grams of suspected smuggled gold valued at nearly ₹99 lakh from a passenger arriving on an international flight from Abu Dhabi. The interception, carried out through intelligence-led passenger profiling, highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen border surveillance and curb the illegal movement of high-value goods through major aviation gateways.
According to customs officials, the passenger was intercepted after risk assessment procedures identified suspicious travel patterns. A detailed search reportedly led to the recovery of gold jewellery concealed inside personal belongings as well as beneath clothing. The recovered items included ornaments such as bangles, chains, necklaces, rings and other jewellery. Authorities stated that the 729 grams of suspected smuggled gold consisted of ornaments of different purity levels with an estimated market value of ₹98.78 lakh. The seized material has been taken into custody under the provisions of the Customs Act, and further legal proceedings are underway. Investigators are now examining the origin of the seized gold, its intended destination and whether the case is connected to a larger smuggling network operating through international air routes. Intelligence agencies routinely analyse passenger travel patterns and baggage movements to identify high-risk consignments and strengthen enforcement against organised smuggling.
