Hyderabad: The Telangana government has established four specialised working groups under the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA) to improve transport planning, strengthen coordination among multiple civic agencies and accelerate the delivery of urban mobility projects across the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area. The move reflects a growing emphasis on integrated governance as the city responds to rising transport demand and rapid urban expansion.
The newly created panels are expected to bring together departments responsible for roads, public transport, planning, traffic enforcement and technology under a coordinated decision-making framework. Urban mobility projects in Hyderabad are currently managed by several agencies, making institutional collaboration increasingly important for improving project execution and reducing overlaps. The Hyderabad urban mobility initiative includes a dedicated group on policy, planning and smart mobility that will work towards a common transport framework promoting integrated, efficient and sustainable movement across the metropolitan region. The panel will also focus on developing standardised policies that can guide future mobility investments as Hyderabad continues to expand. A second working group will concentrate on road improvements and transport infrastructure. Its responsibilities include reviewing junction redesigns, corridor upgrades, pedestrian facilities, skywalks and non-motorised transport infrastructure such as walking and cycling networks. By evaluating transport studies collectively, the panel aims to avoid duplication of projects and improve resource utilisation.
Another committee will oversee enforcement and regulatory coordination, bringing together civic authorities and enforcement agencies to improve the management of public spaces while balancing mobility needs with the livelihoods of street vendors and other road users. Urban planners note that inclusive transport governance is becoming increasingly important as cities seek to create streets that are safer, more accessible and more equitable for all users. The fourth panel will focus on developing an integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), using real-time traffic and transport data to improve congestion management and operational efficiency.
