Pune: Train movement between Pune and Mumbai was severely disrupted on Monday after multiple landslides triggered by intense monsoon rainfall blocked railway tracks in the Bhor Ghat section. The suspension of services on one of India’s busiest intercity rail corridors has affected passenger mobility, logistics and regional connectivity, highlighting the growing need for climate-resilient transport infrastructure across Maharashtra.

Continuous rain during the early hours caused debris and loose earth to slide onto railway tracks at multiple locations between Karjat and Lonavala. Railway authorities immediately halted operations across the affected section while engineering teams began clearing debris and assessing track stability before allowing services to resume safely. The Pune Mumbai rail corridor experienced widespread operational disruption, with several prominent intercity and long-distance trains cancelled, diverted or rescheduled. Services connecting Pune with Mumbai, Solapur, Dhule and other destinations were among those affected as operators sought to minimise safety risks while maintaining limited network connectivity through alternate routes. Officials also established passenger assistance centres at major stations to provide updated travel information as restoration efforts continued. The disruption follows persistent heavy rainfall across western Maharashtra, where the India Meteorological Department has forecast further spells of intense precipitation. The mountainous Bhor Ghat section, which carries three operational railway lines linking Pune and Mumbai, is particularly vulnerable during the monsoon due to steep terrain, unstable slopes and high surface runoff. Transport analysts note that the Pune Mumbai rail corridor is among the country’s most economically significant passenger and freight routes. It supports daily commuting, industrial supply chains, tourism and commercial movement between two of India’s largest urban economies. Even temporary interruptions can affect manufacturing schedules, business travel and logistics operations, increasing pressure on alternative transport networks that may also be impacted by adverse weather. Urban infrastructure experts argue that recurring monsoon-related disruptions point to the need for stronger climate adaptation measures across railway assets. Investments in advanced slope stabilisation, real-time geotechnical monitoring, improved drainage systems and weather-integrated operational planning could reduce the frequency and duration of service interruptions. Authorities indicated that restoration work would continue subject to weather conditions, with safety remaining the highest priority before reopening affected sections. The coordinated deployment of engineering teams reflects the increasing operational demands placed on transport agencies during extreme weather events.
