Hyderabad: Light monsoon showers were enough to slow traffic across Hyderabad’s western technology corridor over the weekend, once again highlighting the vulnerability of key urban roads to even moderate rainfall. The widespread congestion raises broader concerns about drainage infrastructure, road maintenance and traffic management in one of the city’s most significant economic districts, where reliable mobility is critical for businesses, commuters and urban productivity.

Several major routes linking Miyapur, BHEL, Gachibowli, Hitec City, Kondapur, Raidurgam and surrounding neighbourhoods witnessed prolonged traffic delays. Although weekend traffic volumes were lower than on working days due to many offices and educational institutions remaining closed, motorists encountered slow-moving queues across multiple junctions and arterial roads. Commuters reported that journeys covering relatively short distances stretched to between 30 minutes and an hour. Congestion intensified at busy intersections where vehicles accumulated through multiple signal cycles before moving, reflecting the limited capacity of existing road infrastructure during adverse weather conditions. The disruption was driven less by the intensity of rainfall and more by persistent urban infrastructure shortcomings. The Hyderabad IT corridor traffic situation worsened as water accumulated on road surfaces, damaged carriageways reduced driving speeds and inadequate drainage systems struggled to channel rainwater efficiently. Residents say these mobility disruptions have become a recurring feature of every monsoon season despite continued investments in transport infrastructure. While large-scale projects, including flyovers and corridor improvements, are under various stages of execution, many commuters believe localised issues such as potholes, poor road surface quality and ineffective stormwater management continue to undermine travel reliability. Urban mobility specialists note that congestion in Hyderabad’s technology corridor carries economic implications beyond commuter inconvenience. The area hosts major employment centres, commercial developments and business parks that contribute significantly to the metropolitan economy. Delays caused by recurring traffic bottlenecks can reduce productivity, increase fuel consumption and elevate transport-related emissions, making efficient road management an important element of sustainable urban development. Experts also point to the need for integrated solutions that combine infrastructure upgrades with stronger traffic operations. Better drainage maintenance, stricter enforcement against illegal parking and encroachments, real-time traffic monitoring and improved road maintenance could help reduce disruptions during rainfall while longer-term mobility projects are completed.
