Indian Railways is reportedly considering a new fully air-conditioned Amrit Bharat Express service connecting Ahmedabad with Bhagalpur, signalling another step towards expanding long-distance rail connectivity between western and eastern India. While operational details have surfaced, the Railway Ministry is yet to issue an official notification confirming the train’s launch or commencement date.
If approved, the proposed service would become the country’s first fully air-conditioned Amrit Bharat Express, introducing a premium variant of the train category that has so far largely focused on non-air-conditioned services. The development would also add a second Amrit Bharat train to Gujarat’s railway network, strengthening inter-state passenger connectivity. According to the proposed operational plan, the train would operate on a weekly schedule, linking Ahmedabad with major cities and junctions across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar before terminating at Bhagalpur. The corridor would serve several important commercial, educational and pilgrimage destinations, offering another direct rail option for passengers travelling between western and eastern India. Rail transport experts note that expanding premium long-distance services reflects changing travel patterns, with increasing demand for affordable yet comfortable intercity journeys. Fully air-conditioned coaches, modern safety systems and improved passenger amenities are expected to enhance travel quality while supporting growing passenger volumes on high-demand routes.
Beyond passenger convenience, stronger rail connectivity contributes to broader regional development objectives. Improved transport links facilitate labour mobility, educational access, tourism and business travel while supporting economic integration between diverse regional markets. Cities such as Ahmedabad continue to benefit from expanding rail infrastructure as they strengthen their role as major commercial and industrial hubs. Infrastructure analysts observe that Indian Railways has been steadily modernising its passenger network through new rolling stock, upgraded stations and improved onboard facilities. Introducing premium services under the Amrit Bharat Express brand could further diversify travel options while complementing investments in semi-high-speed and high-speed rail corridors.
The proposed route also highlights the importance of strengthening east-west connectivity, linking manufacturing centres, agricultural regions and densely populated urban clusters through a more efficient rail network. Enhanced long-distance services can reduce dependence on road transport while providing a more sustainable mode of intercity travel. As no official approval has yet been announced, the reported timetable, station halts and service specifications remain provisional. Railway officials are expected to release confirmed operational details, including the launch schedule and final route configuration, once the proposal receives formal clearance.
