Ahmedabad Flight Diverts After Child Falls Ill

An IndiGo flight travelling from Ahmedabad to Navi Mumbai made an unscheduled landing at Surat Airport after a young passenger suffered a medical emergency during the journey, highlighting the critical role of airport emergency response systems in ensuring passenger safety.

The aircraft was diverted after the crew reported that a three-year-old child had become unconscious shortly after take-off. Following established aviation safety protocols, the flight crew coordinated with air traffic control to secure priority landing clearance at Surat, where emergency medical arrangements were activated before the aircraft arrived. Airport authorities mobilised medical personnel, security staff and airline ground teams to receive the flight. The child was provided immediate medical attention on arrival and was subsequently transferred to a nearby private hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Once emergency procedures and operational checks were completed, the aircraft resumed its scheduled journey to Navi Mumbai.

While in-flight medical incidents remain relatively uncommon, aviation experts note that rapid coordination between pilots, air traffic controllers, airport operators and emergency services is essential for minimising health risks to passengers. Diversion decisions are typically based on the severity of a passenger’s condition and the availability of suitable medical facilities at nearby airports. The incident also underscores the importance of maintaining well-equipped emergency infrastructure at regional airports. As passenger traffic continues to increase across India’s aviation network, airports beyond major metropolitan hubs are playing a larger role in supporting emergency diversions, ensuring timely medical assistance and reducing response times during critical situations.

Industry observers believe investments in airport healthcare facilities, trained emergency personnel and coordinated response protocols have become increasingly significant as domestic air travel expands. Such preparedness not only enhances operational resilience but also strengthens passenger confidence in the country’s aviation ecosystem. The condition of the child has not been officially disclosed. The airline completed all required operational procedures before allowing the flight to continue its onward journey after the medical evacuation.
