Mumbai’s drinking water reserves have declined further despite recent monsoon showers, underscoring the city’s growing dependence on sustained rainfall to replenish its reservoir network. With Mumbai lake storage falling to just 6.75 per cent of total capacity, civic authorities are closely monitoring reservoir inflows even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall across the region over the coming days. According to the latest reservoir data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the seven lakes supplying water to the metropolitan region collectively hold 97,666 million litres against a full storage capacity of approximately 1.447 million million litres. The figures remain significantly below the corresponding period last year, highlighting the uneven progress of this year’s southwest monsoon and its impact on urban water security.
The Mumbai lake storage system comprises Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi and Vihar reservoirs spread across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Nashik districts. While Vihar and Tulsi registered marginal gains following recent rainfall, several major reservoirs remain critically depleted. Upper Vaitarna and Tansa continue to report negligible storage, while Bhatsa, the city’s largest source of drinking water, remains at a low level. Middle Vaitarna has shown little change, and Modak Sagar has also recorded a slight decline. Urban water experts note that rainfall within Mumbai city alone has limited influence on reservoir replenishment because the lakes depend primarily on precipitation across their distant catchment areas. Uneven rainfall distribution across these regions can therefore leave reservoir levels under stress even when the city experiences frequent showers.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts until July 3, forecasting spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Similar weather conditions are expected across Thane, Palghar, Raigad and other coastal districts, increasing the likelihood of stronger inflows into the reservoir network if catchment areas receive sustained precipitation. While the forecast offers cautious optimism for improving water availability, civic planners emphasise that reservoir management remains a long-term challenge extending beyond seasonal rainfall. Rapid urbanisation, changing rainfall patterns linked to climate variability and rising demand from a growing population continue to place pressure on Mumbai’s water resources. Water security specialists argue that future resilience will depend not only on favourable monsoons but also on strengthening conservation measures, reducing transmission losses, expanding rainwater harvesting and improving demand-side management across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
As the monsoon intensifies, attention will remain focused on whether the expected rainfall can meaningfully improve Mumbai lake storage levels. The coming weeks are likely to determine both the city’s short-term water availability and the effectiveness of longer-term strategies aimed at building a more climate-resilient urban water system.
