Pune: A decade-long ecological restoration initiative on the rocky hill slopes of Bakori and Kesnand has crossed a significant milestone, with more than one lakh native trees planted alongside large-scale water conservation works. The Ecological Restoration programme demonstrates how sustained community-led afforestation and watershed management can strengthen groundwater recharge, restore degraded landscapes and improve climate resilience on the urban fringe.

The latest phase of the initiative coincided with Vat Purnima, during which volunteers and local organisations planted and symbolically honoured banyan trees, a species widely recognised for its ecological, cultural and environmental significance. Officials attending the programme highlighted the importance of combining traditional environmental values with scientific conservation practices to restore fragile ecosystems. Over the past ten years, the project has transformed sections of previously barren and rocky terrain through continuous plantation drives, protection of saplings and long-term maintenance. Integrating afforestation with water conservation and community engagement can improve ecosystem resilience while supporting long-term water security and climate adaptation goals.
